Most of us know the importance and need for business travel. Due to COVID-19, over the greater part of 2020, long lines at security and delays at the baggage claim have been replaced by Zoom meetings. Each of us has a funny story of a video call where one of your kids is asking/yelling “what’s 2+2?” or having to pick up a pet and take them outside in a hurry so that they can do their business. Despite the many conveniences Zoom, or whichever forum you are using brings, business travel will not be replaced in its entirety.
Many years ago, at the retirement party of a former boss, he said something that didn’t leave a dry eye in the room. As he was reflecting on his career and successes, he had one regret. He was able to recount the specific birthdays, anniversaries, recitals, and school events he was unable to attend because he was traveling for business. However, he didn’t remember why that meeting or business trip was so important that it made him miss his loved one’s event. I immediately started taking inventory of all the instances that very same thing happened to me. Unfortunately, I was just as culpable.
I’m a firm believer that “regret” is one of the ugliest things anyone can experience. Family provides the support and strength we need in order to achieve all of those professional successes. Please don’t have the same regret of sacrificing one over the other. Find that balance…….
Happy Holidays to all. Please be safe.
